HOME / UN HOGAR, Art Across Borders: Basalt High School Newcomers, celebrating the voices and artistic expressions of Basalt High School students who have recently arrived in the United States from Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Honduras. The exhibition opens on December 9 and runs through December 27 at The Art Base, located in downtown Basalt.
This community-centered program offers students the opportunity to reflect on the concept of “home” — both the home they’ve left behind and the new home they are building here in the Roaring Fork Valley. Through bilingual instruction and artistic mentorship from Gabriela Mejia, students will create individual artworks and written reflections that explore their personal journeys, cultural identity, and experiences of transition.
The HOME / UN HOGAR program, designed to help students adjust to their new lives, uses art as a medium for self-expression. This winter, students will create visual collages — blending symbols, colors, and imagery that reflect their cultural heritage, memories, and emotional experiences tied to immigration.
HOME / UN HOGAR, Arte a través de las fronteras: recién llegados de Basalt High School Newcomers, una muestra que destaca las voces y expresiones artísticas de los estudiantes recién llegados a Estados Unidos desde México y Centroamérica que asisten a Basalt High School. La exposición se inaugura el 13 de diciembre y estará disponible hasta el 27 de diciembre en The Art Base, en el corazón de Basalt.
Este programa comunitario brinda a los estudiantes la oportunidad de explorar y reflexionar sobre el concepto de “hogar”: el hogar que dejaron atrás y el nuevo que están forjando en el valle Roaring Fork. Con el apoyo de la instrucción bilingüe y la guía artística de Gabriela Mejía, los estudiantes crearán obras de arte individuales que plasman sus trayectos personales, su identidad cultural y las experiencias vividas durante su transición.
El programa HOME / UN HOGAR, concebido para apoyar a los estudiantes en su proceso de adaptación a una nueva vida, utiliza el arte como medio de autoexpresión.
