GALLERY PREPARATOR

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Art Base, a non-profit art center in Basalt, CO, fosters creative expression in the visual arts for all ages and abilities, through education, exhibitions, and show opportunities for artists and artisans. The Art Base serves the Roaring Fork Valley, specifically the mid-valley and Basalt community, which includes several adjacent unincorporated areas in both Eagle and Pitkin counties, Garfield County, and the Roaring Fork School District. We take pride in providing educational opportunities and artmaking experiences, as well as providing a venue for artists to exhibit their work.
The Gallery Preparator requires a diverse range of skills. This position supports the Art Base’s ability to showcase dynamic exhibitions of contemporary art and offer educational programs that are unique and enticing to artists and art enthusiasts. The Art Preparator works under the direction of the Gallery and Shop Manager to conduct the installation and deinstallation of all exhibitions, preparation and gallery repairs in conjunction with exhibitions and events, and general maintenance of the galleries and storage. The successful candidate will oversee both the technical aspects of the exhibitions presented, as well as maintain and identify opportunities to expand the reputation of the gallery and teaching spaces at the facility.
REQUIRED JOB FUNCTIONS:
Artist Liaison:
- – Coordinates with Gallery and Shop Manager on all artist materials including price sheets, show statements, and wall vinyl.
- – Works with Gallery and Shop Manager and Bookkeeper to ensure timely payout of any exhibition bills, and/or shipping invoices.
- – Serves as a volunteer for the Claudette Carter Art Mentors (CCAM) program as well as the Laura Thorne Sculpture Mentors program as needed.
- – Assists organization during workshops, gallery openings, Art Base Council and donor events (including annual gala), and artist talks.
- – Invites art enthusiasts and potential supporters to visit shows.
Installation/Deinstallation:
- – Installs/deinstalls shows approximately every three to four weeks, sometimes involving a total gallery repaint.
- – Coordinates pre-show meetings with artists to assess technical installation and facility needs.
- – Coordinates shipping logistics of artworks in a timely manner for successful installation of shows.
- – Work with Gallery and Shop Manager to order all materials for shows, including wall hangings, vinyl text, hardware, etc.
- – Fabricates all exhibition materials, shelves, pedestals, and suspensions.
- – Cuts and installs vinyl for shows and/or other signage.
- – Collects materials and creates shipping devices for works upon completion of show.
- – Tracks spending and budgets.
PREFERRED SKILLS/FUNCTIONS ALSO INCLUDE:
- – Background in exhibition installation of diverse art media and art handling.
- –Background in digital design and fabrication equipment, including laser bed cutters and 3-D printers to maintain equipment, monitor supplies, update software, and keep current with any advances in technology.
- –Ability to establish and maintain effective, tactful, and courteous working relationships with fellow employees, artists, and the general public.
- –Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required to drive vehicles to move artwork.
COMPENSATION:
This position is part-time up to 29 hours a month with some weekends and evenings required.
The hourly rate is $30.00 an hour.
